DIY SEO: What is Page Rank?

Page Rank is a term used by internet marketers, website owners, and search engine optimizers alike. It's based on Google's PR scale that reflects how "important" and "popular" a website is. Google's scale starts at PR-0 and ends at PR-10. While it was never meant to be a very important figure, many people who own websites often become obsessed with the concept of page rankings.

Basically, a page rank of "0" might reflect a brand new site with no incoming links. A page rank of "10" might reflect that of a globally popular website, such as CNN's website. This is why many people may become obsessed with PR. The higher the number, the better. Unfortunately for many of these people, it takes legitimate popularity, time and real growth. It is my recommendation to those interested in SEO that they not pay attention to the page ranking of their own website.

Sure, having a high page rank is awesome. However, it really has no direct bearing on the SERPs (search engine results pages). Most professional search engine optimizers will pay almost no attention to page rankings whatsoever. This is because it has no real bearing on website placement or positioning in search results - there really is no reason to worry about it.

Websites must be optimized for search engines by worrying about positioning, not page rank. If potential visitors can't find your website, how will your page rank ever grow? Websites must have high quality, helpful, and usable content that serves as a resource for visitors. Once a website is optimized for search engines, and if that content is good enough and is presented in an attractive enough way, chances are the traffic will begin to grow. And it can grow quite a bit - exponentially in fact. But it does take time.
