SEO FAQ: Sitemaps

A Sitemap is a page of static text links that lays out the site structure and is very helpful to search engines and human visitors alike. If there are more than 100 links it is advisable to break up the sitemap into multiple pages. Google specifically warns against having more than 100 links on a page.

I have purchased your SEO guide, Search Engine Optimization: Do It Yourself. It contains lots of great information. My question is on Sitemaps. Is this something that you create specifically? What type of format does it need to be in? Then do I send this information to Google, Yahoo and Bing?

Thanks for getting my SEO Guide - and I'm glad you like it!

Many content management systems (aka CMS, Website Editor) will create Sitemaps for you automatically. At least the good ones do. Otherwise, you can simply create a page yourself with links to all the main pages. This helps both visitors and search engines find all your content, especially if you have a large website.

You don't need to submit your sitemap to the search engines, but you can in order to track how many pages they've indexed, or to show them exactly what you WANT to be indexed. It's really up to you. All you need to do this with Google is set up an account and start using their "Webmaster Tools". There you can submit your sitemap in various formats.

Hope that answers your question - good luck!
