SEO FAQ: Landing Page Optimization

A landing page is whatever page a person arrives at when they have navigated to your website. In most cases, this will be your home page. In other words, it's the page people see first when they go to your website. Optimizing this page is important. So far, we've talked about optimizing the code or information (titles, meta tags, text content, etc). Landing Page Optimization has to do with all of that plus one other thing - visual optimization.

Is your website layout the best it could be? Are people seeing what they need within a reasonable amount of time? Do they know what your website is about, and why they should stay there? These things are very important - especially to businesses trying to create online conversions (sales). Visually optimize your landing pages with these concepts in mind.

Note: The SEO Guide goes into this in much greater detail, including the explanation and use of heat maps for the best visual optimization possible.

I like this information. I found Smart Viper to be very helpful, yet I found some of the information very concerning. The Keywords Pie & Analytics seemed off and the SEO scores to be very low. Is this just my site? Or are these results typical?

Hi Diane, thanks for your question!

I do mention Smart Viper in my guide, and I'm glad you checked it out. The only thing I recommend looking at with much scrutiny is the heat map at the bottom of the results page. Smart Viper grades sites extremely hard. It seems like only extremely popular or extremely high page rank sites do well. So, please don't pay their scoring much attention. It is not consistent with other website graders out there that seem to be much more realistic.
