SEO FAQ: Image Names

Naming images is another opportunity to introduce relevant text onto a web page. For example, an image with the name of “12863main_image_feature_620_ys_2.jpg” adds absolutely no value to the page. It would be much better to name the image “flowers.jpg”, or whatever name you feel is most descriptive of the image you are using. Matching the Image Name and Alt Attribute in some way is advisable.

Oh, it's me again. My website is several years old and my photos are just like you have written in your SEO guide. My pictures are labeled picture1, picture2, ect. Should I take the time to reload my photos with relevant names? Or should I just start using better names from here on out?

Hello again :)

It really depends on how much of a perfectionist you are. I would recommend uploading the photos to match the Alt Attributes you are putting on them. That way, you gain more relevancy for whatever keywords or terms you are putting in your Alt Attributes.

Obviously it's your choice - either way, definitely start naming the images more descriptively from now on. :P
