SEO FAQ: Ethics

When it comes to SEO, there are ethical and good practices (white-hat), and there are unethical and bad practices (black-hat).

Hidden text, keyword spamming, link buying and "link farm" participation are some of the most popular unethical practices used today. The relevancy they have to your website is not real, and most of the time search engines (especially Google) can see right through it. Chances are, if a search engine finds out what you've done and "feels" as though you are trying to manipulate results unfairly, it will penalize you or worse - completely remove your website from its search index.

Ask questions or make comments here about general SEO ethics. Click here to ask questions specifically about black-hat SEO tactics.

Hello, after purchasing your e-book, I have learned a great deal. I am now looking into link-building. I have looked into several software programs and I am very concerned with purchasing one because I want to do these things correctly (white-hat). There are many on the market. Do you happen to have a software program that you would suggest?

Thank you, your book has been a great help to me on doing my own SEO on my website.

Hi Lynn, that's a really good question.

I've got a really great recommendation for the best link building software on my SEO Resources page. It's called SEO PowerSuite. It's really powerful software that will help you tremendously with your link building. Check out what I've written about it by going to the SEO Resources section on this website. Or, copy and paste this URL into your browser:

I've also written more about link building here in the FAQs. Use the green menu to the right to find the section on link building. :)

Thanks for the compliments, too!

Cheers,
Chris
