When it comes to SEO, there are ethical and good practices (white-hat), and there are unethical and bad practices (black-hat).
Hidden text, keyword spamming, link buying and "link farm" participation are some of the most popular unethical practices used today. The relevancy they have to your website is not real, and most of the time search engines (especially Google) can see right through it. Chances are, if a search engine finds out what you've done and "feels" as though you are trying to manipulate results unfairly, it will penalize you or worse - completely remove your website from its search index.
