SEO FAQ: Connections

SEO Connections is about both inbound and outbound links. It's also about the quality and amount of those links. The more links that point to a site, the more "popular" a site is going to be considered by the search engines. If fifty sites use the words "Awesome Websites" and link that text to a website, search engines are going to be more in favor of listing that website at the top of their index for that keyword phrase.

The sites that link to yours must be relevant, helpful sites all by themselves. The more "important" or "popular" sites that link to yours are, the more important and popular yours will be as well. The best way to succeed in this area is to become a viable resource of information for internet surfers like yourself. The more useful or informative the content, the more other websites will naturally link to yours. Remember, the concept of SEO Connections is not only about the amount of sites that point to yours, it's also about the quality of those connections.

Note: Obviously this has a lot to do with link building. If you're confused by link building or simply don't have to time to do all that it takes, I'd recommend SEO PowerSuite. You can read my review of it on the SEO Resources page.

In your book you talk about using online media such as Digg. Does having my own blog help? How can I tell if my blog is connected to my website? I have heard that Wordpress is great, however if not linked to my website I am not getting the benefits. If this is true, what are your suggestions?

Thanks for writing your eBook. I am getting more information than I had anticipated.

Plenty of good questions there...

1. DIGG is great for sharing your articles with the rest of the internet. If your content is interesting, useful, or helpful enough chances are "digging" it can give you some extra traffic. As far as the social aspect of SEO goes, I'd first recommend Facebook and Twitter.

2. If your blog is connected to your website, it would be a part of your domain. Example: www.yoursite.com/blog or blog.yoursite.com. Wordpress blogs can also be used as your entire website - not just a blog. Either way, I'd recommend always keeping your blog on the same domain, otherwise you are splitting up your traffic and page rank, when it should be united.

Good luck, and thanks for your questions and compliment!

Another quick question - I am reading your book Search Engine Optimization: Do It Yourself. I have found everything so far very useful; however, I am not sure that I completely understand Alexa.com.

We use Alexa.com in order to see traffic metrics - in a nutshell, we use it to find out how popular your site is, and if it is getting more popular, or more unpopular as the case may be.

The closer to #1 you are, the better. Imagine it like a race. The person that finishes "first" wins the race. Using this analogy, let's imagine that all websites are part of this race. That would mean that over a trillion people (websites) are racing towards the finish line, or at least the best place they can possibly get. If you finish in the top one million, that's pretty good, since the race consists of over a trillion people. The closer to #1, the better.

Check your ranking on Alexa.com over time to see if your search engine optimization and social networking is working. Ranking is a strange animal and changes naturally over time with trends that don't always make sense - but the overall trend is what you'll be looking for. Usually it's spot-on.

I hope that helps, and good luck!
